I worked with Joe many years ago in Chicago. A friend of Ross Taylor’s, Joe was very generous to model for me when I was only just starting out–hence the awful backdrop; I retired that soon after this shoot.

When I was first starting out I was extended a wonderful invitation and opportunity to shoot competitive bodybuilders at several national shows spanning a couple of years and I have a whole series of images from those shows that are real favorites of mine. This one is from backstage as the competitors are either preparing to go on for or just coming back from pre-judging or finals. The muscularity of this man’s back, his sweat, really everything about him just exudes masculinity to me and that’s why I love this particular image.
What can I say about Tony DeFina that hasn’t already been said? I love this image because it was one of the first we created together and it’s 100% Tony: from the wifebeater to the sweet hint of pubes above the beltline of those jeans, this is the down to earth, real, masculine man Tony is. Of course I also love it because he’s wearing the red cap…

The first time I worked with PJ he flew to Austin to spend a week shooting with me for the site we created together (that now someone else has taken over). I had many locations set up, one of which was the Chain Drive bar. I got some leather gear and brought it in; PJ confessed he had never worn leather and wasn’t really keen on the idea of being shot in leather. The results turned out really well and PJ’s attitude about how he looks in leather changed forever.
This is one of my favorite photos I’ve ever done. Tom is the kind of guy who knows exactly what to do in front of the camera and he was a breeze to work with.
